V E S T I G I A L. W I N G S

Welcome to our second segment were we'll be featuring some 'Up and Coming' blogs! This week we spoke to the lovely Alice from Vestigial Wings!

1. Your name please!
Alice

2. And you’re how old?
20-something

3. What on Earth inspired you to start blogging?
It was long overdue! Over the last couple years, I've tried (unsuccessfully) to get roommates and friends to start a blog with me. I wanted that conversational aspect that collaborative blogs have. I didn't want to go solo because I didn't want to just write what I was thinking, and be talking to myself. It didn't really click to me that there are so many other people who DO want to converse on the topics I'm interested in, and that it just takes a little bit more "putting yourself out there", which is superly opposite from who I am in real life. I'm so glad I'm alive when the internet exists, because when people around you might not be feeling what you're feeling, it enables us to connect with others who are interested in the same types of things.

4. Tell us a little bit about your baby..err…blog!
After being spoiled by SoCal, moving to Kansas and shopping experience here was so different. Many clothing chain retailers (H&M, Zara, Macys) don't have locations here, so I relied on online shopping for awhile until I discovered thrifting. I am hooked. I feel socially responsible and also budget conscious now that I buy less retail, but I also have a lot more fun with the shopping experience now. I really love preowned and vintage, in knowing that every piece is from a different time period and was styled by its' previous owner in an era specific way. My mother is a packrat and our basement is filled with her clothes and my grandmother's clothes so I feel lucky to have discovered the value of vintage clothing and that these pieces are not sitting in boxes unloved. In my blog, I like to document my adventures with thrifting and how I end up wearing the pieces. I'm very new to this, so I like to hear suggestions and opinions from readers about how I'm styling these new (to me!) pieces.
Also, I like to make lists. I'm a very analytical thinker and I like to narrow things down to be very basic or very necessary, so you will see lots of lists on my blog.

5. Your favourite trend at the moment?
Phoebe Philo for Celine, 90s revival

6. Favourite ‘Moment in Fashion’?
One of my favorites are the heel-less wedges. When I first saw them, I thought of them almost on the level of a interactive art. The shoes really pushed the boundaries of what we know and think wedge shoes are. I love analyzing structure versus function, and architecture in general is one of my interests. Heels and wedges are such structural forms, by themselves and also in interacting with your feet to support the weight of your whole body! I have bad knees so I wear heels more rarely now, but it doesn't mean I can't admire from afar!

7. If your life was a movie who would play you, and who would you cast as your love interest?
Kate Bosworth! I see something on the runway and dream about it for a couple weeks...then I see her wearing it. Not fair! So she'd be a newer, improved, idealized version of myself. And I pick Tom Felton just because I think he's adorable.

8. If you were a vegetable what would you be and why?
Hmm, an olive? I love the taste of olive oil and I think its awesome how versatile olives are. Are olives even a vegetable? Just in case they aren't, I'll be an heirloom tomato instead. They look cool and they taste good with basil and fresh mozzarella. This is probably the worst answer ever because I don't look cool and taste good with basil and fresh mozzarella.

9. And away from your fabulous life as a fashion blogger what do you do?
Sifting through secondhand goodies and listing the good stuff at Diopter's General Store on Etsy http://www.etsy.com/shop/DioptersGeneralStore
I'm also a full-time student who is obsessed with buildings, every show on HGTV and the food network, and Say Yes to the Dress.

10. Let’s continue this wonderful spreading of love, tell us a few blogs that you love to read!
