B L U S H.

Skirt and shirt; Red Berry. Cardigan; Thrifted. Heels; Unknown. Rings; Various etsy stores.

I am making a new pact with my wardrobe, no matter how beautiful or special or 'on sale' something is, I will not buy anything that doesn't fit me perfectly. I snapped up this skirt a while back for sale price because I'd been searching for a simple black skirt for what seemed like eternity. When I was in the change room, despite the skirt being obviously a size and a half too big, I told myself 'It's only because I haven't had lunch yet, once that food baby kicks in I'll be right as rain.' Unfortunately we all know if something doesn't fit you when you try it on, it's never going to fit you. Now looking back at these photos I see how horrible and unflattering it looks. Skater skirts are meant to nip in at the waist, this sort of just...hangs. So lesson learnt, I am now only going to buy things that one hundred percent fit me.
On another completely unrelated note, I am starting to find I actually enjoy wearing pink. Whereas once the 'anti girly-girl' inside me screamed bloody murder at the sight of that unholy shade, I am now embracing blush tones and even a hint of fuscia into my wardrobe. And they're surprisingly easy to wear I'm finding that some simple blush pieces not only slot into a black and white outfit like this one, but they complement other pastels as well. Not to sound like a complete cliche' but you could almost say I've started seeing pink through rose coloured glasses, a whole new frame of mind for a whole new shade of the rainbow.

  1. Laura I usually just look at your posts and not often make a comment - but despite the ill-fitting skirt and the similar abhorrence I have for the colour pink (which coincidentally I just blogged about - how convenient) this is the best post I've seen of you so far. That first image is absolutely stunning! I love the freckles! (in a not weird way!)

  2. I really like this outfit! I certainly didn't look at those photos and think "THAT SKIRT DOESN'T FIT HER RAHHH". Haha. I've also gotten more into pink lately, don't quite know what's come over me!

  12. Okay... I guess the fourth time is a charm!! ;)

Your skirt looks like it fits you well, I would of never of noticed. I like the flattering cut of those types of skirts, though most of the time they are quite short on me and sometimes too short. So see it as a plus yours hangs lower.

Pretty blue eyes in the first photo!

  13. dear laura, that color really brings out the blue in your eyes. what lovely flowers. i say donate the ill fitting skirt, so you can make one that fits you perfectly. here's to letting your inner girly girl out, even if it's only once in a while, for rainbows can be wonderful.

  15. Oh I dont think that the skirt looks bad on you. In fact, it's almost convincing in these photos that they fit, because they are rather high on not sittng on your hips. But dont you just hate that, when you find the perfect piece but it DOESN'T fit. That always happens with me with jeans on sale. The ones on sale are alwayssss to BIG! Please just let me buy you at half price, pleaseeee jeans! haha

  21. ha! you should see my pile of "don't fit, need repair, etc" garments. SCARY. I guess that's the downside of being able to sew.

I had a similar pink ban - working as a Barbie doll designer really made me despise pink for a long time - and am emerging from it. Sometimes pink is OK. It does lift the spirits and is kind to one's complexion.

I was drawn to this post by the lilac closeup. So pretty! I love lilacs... a bush that doesn't grow that well in soCal (not like the East coast lilacs I grew up with).
